The Fundación madrimasd para el Conocimiento (from hereon fmi+d) was established under the initiative of the Government Council of the Community of Madrid (General Directorate of Universities and Research. DGUI) to manage a number of programmes (Internationalisation of Research, Enterprise Europe Network, Innovation Circles for Economic Intelligence, NTBF support, etc) of the DGUI. Keeping in line with DGUI objectives, fmi+d aims at promoting scientific quality research, stimulating technology innovation and joint actions between the scientific and business communities, developing a framework to encourage start-ups from Research and Development projects and participating in European R&D programmes and projects
fmi+d is a non-profit organisation with four major units: 1) Knowledge transfer, 2) Innovative entrepreneurship, and 3) European Research Area, 4) Science and Society;
It establishes the general activities framework through the following broad objectives:
Promote scientific quality research
Stimulate technology innovation and joint actions between the scientific and business communities
Co-ordinate actions with universities and research institutions
Develop a framework to encourage the creation of companies from research, development and demonstration projects
Co-ordinate scientific research and technology development activities with regional, national and international organisations/institutions
Maintain information and communication facilities to link scientific, industrial and technological communities
Participate in European R&D programmes and projects
Fmi+d is a member of the regional innovation network madri+d, which aims at promoting/facilitating academic and business communities as part of the global action line established in the Regional Plan for Scientific Research and Technological Innovation . The network has more than 40 members, including RTD centres, Universities, Trade and Business associations, etc. All the members work together in many projects, and are accustomed to develop cooperation projects. That’s why success in mobilizing resources is assured as it is the day to day work in madri+d network.

A new biomaterial for bone tissue engineering applications
The biomaterial promotes osteointegration by controlling the peptide exposure to the surrounding tissue. This induces activation of osteoprogenitors towards the formation of bone forming cells (osteoblasts), which determines that bone formation occurs in close vicinity of the implanted biomaterial.
- The new biomaterial induces new bone formation, and presents anti-inflammatory features. It accelerates bone repair by increasing the amount and quality of newly formed bone.
- Production of the new bioceramic is simple and inexpensive, and it can be used as compressed powder or as tridimensional scaffolds.
- The peptide component of the biomaterial is active at low concentrations (
The physical properties of this bioceramic make it suitable for its use in particular clinical applications. The coated peptide is small enough (5 amino acids) to be easily synthesized by standard chemical methods, which is an advantage as compared to biotechnology techniques. Its coating onto the bioceramic can be performed by either simple adsorption or covalent binding to control peptide release.
